Escape Rooms in the Classroom

How would the escape room idea be incorporated in the classroom?

The escape room idea incorporated a variety of creative learning opportunities catering to diverse student interests. The various tasks leading to the unlocking the treat box included problem solving, technology, reflection, and general discussion which are all key components of being literate in the 21st century. This activity may also be interesting to incorporate in other subjects such as History as students may take on the roles of explorers. Overall, this activity can easily be incorporated in the classroom to generate meaningful learning while catering to different learning styles.

How is this style of learning meaningful for students?

The escape room idea encourages 21st century learning in many different ways. The activities involve the use of technology and encourage the development of transferable skills including: problem solving, reflection, communication, and collaboration. Furthermore, the treats in the boxes at the end of the activity serve as rewards and incentives for students who may struggle with Mathematics and encourage them to participate. Students may also learn better when working in groups as they can feed off of each other and discuss strategies to reach the next step. This activity is beneficial for teachers as well because teachers observe their students interact and strategize, allowing for a co-learner experience. Teachers may learn new strategies and ways of thinking from their students, overall enhancing the learning experience for all.
